While traveling this past holiday season, I Just Wanna Do Crafts was inspired to make a batch of yummy mulled wine. Mulled wine is made with red wine, spices including nutmeg, cloves and cinnamon, sugar, and orange zest, and it is often served with slices of orange.
This famous wine originated in the 2nd century and was created by the Romans who would heat wine to help defend their bodies against the cold winter weather. Although it is traditionally served around Christmas, I Just Wanna Do Crafts served this spicy drink at a dinner party this past weekend.
We’d like to thank Ina Garten from the Food Network for her mulled wine recipe. It is just sweet enough with layers of complex flavor that wowed our guests and was the talk of the party.
Level: Easy
Total: 20 min
Prep: 10 min
Cook: 10 min
Yield: 8 servings
Ingredients:
4 cups apple cider
1 (750-ml) bottle of red wine, such as Cabernet Sauvignon
1/4 cup honey
2 cinnamon sticks
1 orange, zested and juiced
4 whole cloves
3 star anise
4 oranges, peeled, for garnish
Directions:
Combine the cider, wine, honey, cinnamon sticks, zest, juice, cloves and star anise in a large saucepan, bring to a boil and simmer over low heat for 10 minutes. Pour into mugs, add an orange peel to each and serve.
There you have it… a mulled wine to keep you warm during this frosty winter season. If serving for a dinner party, simply leave the burner on “Low“ or “Warm”, and it will stay nice and warm all night long.
Enjoy!
